What Is a Treadmill Desk All About?

We all know that living a sedentary lifestyle is bad for us and can be very detrimental to our health. Some of us spend hours upon hours sitting at our desks with little to no exercise during the day.

But is a treadmill desk taking it too far? Are we just going from one extreme to another?

The simple act of walking for 30 minutes a day can provide us with a tremendous amount of health benefits as seen in this article. The idea of the treadmill desk was to combine the efforts of walking and working to increase productivity. But is it really feasible? Can one actually be productive while walking simultaneously on a treadmill? My short answer is, YES…

The Transition From Sitting to Walking

It is a pretty big transition from a seated position while at work, to a standing position. Everybody thinks that you should be first transitioning to a standing desk, and then slowly making your way to the treadmill desk. This is NOT what you should be doing! Standing in one spot for hours on end is very hard on the body:

  1. Suffer from muscular strain
  2. Insufficient blood supply
  3. Causes blood pooling in the legs
  4. May be damaging to inert tissues (ligaments, connective tissue, etc.)

Going from one extreme (sitting all day) to another extreme (walking/standing all day) instantly in one day is not going to benefit you – it is going to end up hurting you in the long run.

We need to give our bodies time to adjust especially if we are used to sitting all day. I would suggest starting out with a SIT-STAND desk which enables you to sit or stand at the office. Once you have mastered the sit-stand desk, you then have my permission to move onto the treadmill desk (keeping in mind that you must take it easy at the starting).

The great thing about a treadmill desk is that you don’t have to be walking all the time. You can just shut it off and use it as a normal standing desk.

I also want you guys to note that there is a significant difference from experiencing pain and being sore. Pain is bad, and in this case it is likely to be an overuse injury (too much too soon injury). Being sore is not a bad thing at all (you just have to make sure that you don’t overdo it). At the beginning you will experience some soreness and that is natural, it will fade away as your body starts to adjust. What is not natural is experiencing pain… You must be able to differentiate between the two.

Who Is It For?

A treadmill desk is for anyone who spends most of their day working at a desk, on their computer, or sitting down at the office. People who already live fairly active lives shouldn’t really need to invest in one of these – at that point it would just be considered a luxury item. Sometimes it is hard to convince your boss to let you have certain things in the office. So these treadmill desks are probably tailored more to people who work from home because they have the space and the “final say” in whether they are allowed to have it.

Would I Recommend It?

Yes, I would highly recommend investing in this treadmill desk if you have the money and space for it, you won’t be let down! You can also use it while watching T.V., and doing other similar activities. Personally I love my treadmill desk, and at the end of the day I feel tired and happy about how productive I was!

I definitely would say that the pros outweigh the cons and I can confidently say that the LifeSpan TR1200-DT7 Treadmill Desk has changed my life for the better!
