Easy as Pie

Varidesk products are known for their “ease of use”.

Just like all other Varidesk products, the Varidesk Cube Corner 48 requires no-assembly. It is as simple as opening up the box and placing it right on top of your existing desk. All you have to do after is customize the desk in whichever way you prefer, whether that be adding monitors, a keyboard, mouse, etc. In a matter of minutes, you can have your Varidesk Cube Corner 48 up and running. Unlike other desktop-risers that have to be screwed down or secured to your desk, the Varidesk Cube Corner 48’s relies on a heavy base to hold it down in position. This also saves on assembly-time, and prevents you from screwing holes or ruining your pre-existing desk.

For me, saving time on tedious tasks like assembling a desk is a big deal – I would rather utilize my time in a better/more productive way!

The Cube Corner | Fits Just Right

Corner desks are generally hard to work with. Thus far, there hasn’t been a height-adjustable sit stand desk that is super-compatible for the corner of your desk.. It is tricky to find a height-adjustable desk-riser that is suitable for the corner of you desk, that’s just the plain truth. Varidesk designed the Varidesk Cube Corner 48 to address this particular problem.

Varidesk Cube Corner 48The Varidesk Cube Corner 48 was specifically designed to fit into the corner of your desk (hence the “Cube Corner”). It takes up a smaller amount of real-estate compared to the other Varidesk models; making it very appealing to those people who work in compact spaces, such as cubicles. The triangular work surface measures a 33 ” depth x 48″ width, allowing you plenty of room to work with. There is an adequate amount of space to fit either dual monitors on the top surface, or a laptop, plus a single monitor – your choice! The Varidesk Cube Corner 48 has revolutionized the way in which we go about working in the corners of our desks!

Like the Varidesk Pro Plus 36, the Varidesk Cube Corner 48 is built with a drop-down keyboard tier. The keyboard level was added in an attempt to enhance proper ergonomic positioning when typing. Although the keyboard tier is a nifty little feature, it doesn’t totally fix the problem. The Varidesk Cube Corner 48 keyboard is attached to the top tier level, as the top level moves, so does the bottom, and visa versa. Keyboards should be adjustable, not everyone is the same, so naturally, not everyone is going to be typing at the same height.

Although it was  a good attempt to make the desk more ergonomic-friendly, it does not address the main issue – which is, avoiding prolonged wrist extension.

3 Seconds Between Sitting and Standing

In just 3 seconds, you can switch between sitting and standing.

Just like all the other Varidesk models, the Varidesk Cube Corner 48 was built with an easy-to-use spring-loaded height-adjustable mechanism. To adjust the height of the desk, squeeze down on the levers underneath either side of the desk and simply raise or lower to your preferred height and then release them to lock the desk into place. The Varidesk Cube Corner 48 only comes with a limited 11 different height-adjustable settings.

Problems… Precision and Ergonomics

The majority of desk-risers out there have moved on from this height adjustable mechanism mainly because of 2 reasons. First, many people find the locking noise loud and annoying. Personally, I am not bothered by this sound – it’s not like you or your fellow employees are going to be switching between standing and sitting every 2 minutes…

Also, many companies now utilize gas-assisted lifting mechanisms or have converted to using electric-lifting mechanisms.Varidesk Cube Corner 48 reviews

The second-most important flaw of this desk is the height adjustable range. The lever locking mechanism doesn’t allow for precise adjustments like electric and gas-assisted desks do…

The desk only adjusts in increments of  1.28″, making it hard to find the perfect height (especially if you fall in-between those increments). Gas-assisted and electric-desks are a lot more precise and allow you to stop at any preferred height along their vertical range.

When adjusting the desk, instead of going straight up and down, the desk swings out in an arc motion. This is another minute flaw of all the Varidesk models. As the desk raises, it swings out and pushes you further and further away from your desk (which may have important materials on it that you need to use). Also, ironically, this swinging motion eliminates the desks main purpose of saving room and reducing the overall footprint. Gas-assisted and electric desks avoid this annoying feature by adjusting straight up and down. Also, it is strange that Varidesk still is designed in this particular way. Similar desks that use the same lever-lifting mechanism do have the ability to adjust straight up and down – like the WorkFit T Sit Stand Desk.

I guess the saying does stand true: “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”.

Ergonomic Improvements

There is a way to slightly improve on the ergonomics of the Varidesk Cube Corner 48, but it will cost you. The Varidesk doesn’t come with any mounting options, therefore it forces you to place your monitors right on top of the desk-riser. In order to achieve more of a proper ergonomic positioning, you are going to want to purchase the clamp-on monitor arm that is built specifically for the Varidesk Cube Corner 48. Without an adjustable monitor, you are going to suffer from possible neck and shoulder strains. It is crucial to have your monitor at the proper viewing height.

However, on the positive side, this monitor mount is better than most of the other mounts out there on the market. It provides you with an extra 20.5″ of height and also lets you swivel your monitor side-to-side (most mounts only let you move the monitor vertically).

If you are serious about working in a correct ergonomic position, you will have to buy the clamp-on mount. This is what makes this desk expensive, the monitor is an extra $125, when combining this with the desk it comes out to be $620.

Varidesk Cube Corner 48 Review – The Verdict

The Varidesk Cube Corner 48 Review wouldn’t be complete without a verdict from our experts!

This particular desk-riser has it’s positives, and it’s negatives – just like any other desk would.Varidesk Cube Corner 48 reviewss

The Varidesk Cube Corner 48 is a good attempt at making compact office spaces, such as corners, and cubicles, more user-friendly. The fatal engineering flaws really put a damper in this desk’s overall usability/potential. Not only does the desk have a limited 11 imprecise height adjustment settings, it protrudes out as it adjusts to greater heights – leaving you with even less space to work with in your compact office. In order to use the Varidesk Cube Corner 48 ergonomically, you must also purchase a monitor mount (which is an extra $125).

We hate to rag so hard on the Varidesk, we still do very much like their products. Although Varidesk does have some questionable ergonomic calls sometimes, it still is easy-to-use, sturdy, and will ultimately get the job done. This desk is perfect for beginners!
