In-Between Sitting and Standing

Both sitting and standing for an extended period of time can be very hard on your body. Martin Keen and his team of experts at Focal Upright Furniture have set on a mission to revolutionize the way we work at the desk.

The Objective: create a optimized work environment that promotes functionality, fun, and well-being.

Maybe you are at a cross-road and can’t decide whether to purchase a sitting desk, or a standing desk. The Focal Upright Locus Workstation will help you find that happy-medium in between. The locus leaning stool combines the health benefits associated with standing, with the comfort of sitting. Focal Upright has incorporated their signature leaning stool with their unique height-adjustable tilted desk to create the marvellous Focal Upright Locus Workstation.

Lean On Itfocal upright locus seat

The idea of any leaning stool is to help promote correct posture and increase the level of activity throughout the workday. Instead of sitting on-top of a chair, users will lean against the chair and distribute some of their weight on the stool, and the rest of it on the floor with their feet – ultimately forming a tripod position.

Leaning on a stool can be tricky at first, and it does take some time get used to it. But, after a little while, this stool will help you combat the all-so retched “sitting disease”. You will never work in pain again!

“There is a place between standing and sitting where our body wants to be. It’s a natural and neutral posture and it just feels right.” – Martin Keen CEO of Focal Upright

By placing some of your weight on the floor, it forces you to remain active throughout the day. The small, but constant muscle activation that the leaning stool induces will help stimulate your metabolism and reduce your overall sedentary behaviour. Unless you are very conscious about moving around, a normal standing desk does not encourage as much movement as a leaning stool.

Leaning strongly enforces correct spinal alignment and reduces the amount of pressure produced in your lower back; compared to the harsh abuse you endure from sitting. After years of tinkering, Focal Upright has final perfected the way in which we work at a desk! The folks at Focal Upright engineered the stool to help your spine form a healthy neutral 135 degree angle.spinal alignment

Achieving correct spinal alignment is extremely important – the destructive 90 degree sitting angle is the root cause of your back pain.

Leaning stools were designed to keep users active; every time you move, the stool moves (you and the stool will move in harmony with one another!).

Every company has their own unique way of adding stability to a leaning stool. The Locus leaning stool uses a brass and steel pivot joint that allows for quiet, fluid movement. The stool helps create and convert our bodies natural fidgety movements into an ongoing exercise throughout the day – keeping your core and legs engaged all-day long. Don’t be deterred by a little exercise, eventually it will become second nature and you will be getting an exercise in, without even knowing it!

The actual seat itself is shaped like a saddle – there are two depressions on either side of the seat for the users thighs to fit nicely into. The seat is angled downward to promote a more relaxed open-hip posture. The seat forces the users pelvis into a more natural ergonomic position; straightening the spine to relieve pressure on the back.

The Focal Upright Locus Workstation also includes an angled foot board for you to rest your feet onto. This is a new addition to the Focal Upright Furniture, usually with a leaning stool, you would simply place your feet on the floor. The specialists at Focal Upright discovered that the placement of your feet is key for increasing endurance. Without an inclined footrest, your feet would fatigue fairly quickly because of the prolonged extended position of your feet and ankles.

Wait, That’s Expensive

Im not going to beat around the bush with this one – the Focal Upright Locus Workstation Bundle Pro does cost a substantial amount of money. There a ton of other great purchases you could make with $2,499. You could buy a full-fledged treadmill desk, a ton of groceries, a car, or even maybe a whole new wardrobe – it’s your choice!

You never want to be cheap when it comes to your health

But if we are talking money (which we are), we need to briefly talk about our return-on-investment (ROI). Sure, maybe this desk is very expensive, but it is worth it in the long run. So why would you want the Locus Workstation for your office?

It all comes down to usability – it’s compact, good-looking, fun, quiet, and easy-to-use. It really is a one size fits-all desk that encourages activity and correct posture. Beyond all of that, it is much easier on your body then standing, walking and sitting. Out of all the workstations I have tried/reviewed, I find that I am in my most creative and productive state when working at the Focal Upright Locus Workstation. I have suffered from chronic lower back pain for years on end, so naturally I had to find an alternative way of working at a desk (that is a big reason why I created this site in the first place). This Locus Workstation is still (to this day) the only workstation that I can comfortably work at, pain-free!

The Uniquely Angled Desk

focal locus deskThe desk is nothing remotely close in appearance and design to standard height-adjustable desks. You can tell right off the bat that there was a lot of hard work, time, and thought that went into the engineering of this desk. The desk is one fine-looking piece of furniture. The Focal Locus Angled Desk was built with a positive tilt (meaning that the back end of the table is elevated on purpose). The desk can achieve a range of tilt from 0 (flat) to +15 degrees.

You are able to adjust the amount of incline by releasing the handles on the side of the desk frame. A crank that allows you to adjust the height of the desk is hidden in a rather peculiar spot, beneath the desk. Users must bend over to adjust the height of the desk – which may seem like a tedious task to some. On the plus side, the crank does remain out of the way when using the desk. The desktop is available in three different lengths just incase you are a person who likes to have a lot of desk-space;  30″ x 48″ , 30″ x 60″ , and 30″ x 72″.

Speed is not a strong suit of the desk – the average transit time of this desk is four crank-turns for every inch of height travel. This is not a huge deal though, usually once you find your “sweet spot” theres no need for any further adjustments.

Feel Motivated, Productive, and (gasp..) Even Happy at Work!

The desk is suitable to accommodate people who are looking to lean or stand, specifically those people who fit between the height range of 4″11 and 6″10. The desk is not necessarily the most portable (around 90 lbs), but it does have the ability to support up to 180 lbs of pressure.

For those of you who were thinking about using the Locus desk with the hopes of inserting a treadmill underneath, you may want to look somewhere else. The cross bar that is positioned between the two legs inhibits you from sliding a treadmill underneath. Also, the desk can only adjust to a maximum height of 48″, it doesn’t account for the extra 6″ of a treadmill. Placing a treadmill underneath will ultimately render the desk useless – making it too short for use.

Stand and Lean In Extreme Comfort.

Lets talk more about the tabletop.

The tabletop is constructed out of high-grade plywood making it very strong and sturdy. The tabletop is available in 4 different colors; black, oak, walnut and white. The different sizes of the tabletop gives you an adequate amount of real estate to work with. The front edge of the desk is ergo-contoured to increase the comfort level and reduce any scratching or scraping that non-contoured desks facilitate. The desk is 0.75 inches” thick allowing you to mount a keyboard tray onto it if you so please. It is highly recommended that you do opt in and purchase a keyboard tray to allow for a healthy ergonomically correct typing position. Without the keyboard tray, your wrists are subjected to an unhealthy overextended position.

Closing Remarks… It’s Worth It.

Focal is quickly becoming one of my favourite companies. Martin Keen, along with his team of specialists have really created something spectacular here. The Focal Upright Locus Workstation is innovative and super effective – to say the least.

If you are a person who is striving to optimize their workplace and break-free of the debilitating sitting-lifestyle, the Focal Upright Locus Workstation may be for you. If you suffer from chronic back pain, neck pain, or shoulder pain (like I once did) and are a victim of the “sitting-disease”, this desk also may be for you.

The price may deter some people (and for a good reason, it is a hefty sum of money), but the quality of this product is undeniable. You never want to be cheap when it comes to your health.
